Dothan Housing Makes Strong Showing at SERC MLK Basketball Tournament

Dothan, AL — Dothan Housing Authority (DHA) proudly announces the successful participation of its youth basketball team in the 2024 SERC (Southeast Regional Council) MLK Basketball Tournament hosted by the Opelika Housing Authority. Held in Opelika, Alabama, from January 12-14, the tournament brought together teams from public housing authorities across the southeastern region for a weekend of exciting competition, valuable fellowship, and educational opportunities.

The DHA team, composed of talented young athletes aged 12-18, displayed exemplary sportsmanship and competitive spirit throughout the tournament. They showcased their skills and dedication on the court, battling against opponents like Bessemer Housing Authority and Opelika Housing Authority. While their final win-loss record may not reflect it, the team made impressive strides and gained valuable experience and new friends!

Beyond the basketball court, DHA youth immersed themselves in the tournament’s enriching and historical aspects, as well as team bonding experiences like a movie theatre outing. They participated in dialogue about sportsmanship, engaged with presentations, and received motivational words from coaches and speakers. These additional activities, including the closing banquet, fostered a sense of community, empowerment, and cultural awareness among the young participants.

“The players had a great time participating in the tournament, and the camaraderie displayed between the teams was extremely moving,” said Resident Services Specialist Hillary Richardson.

“It’s been great to coach this team alongside Coach James Curry,” says Michael Walker, DH Youth Basketball Coach and Maintenance Professional. “We can’t wait for next year!”

The SERC MLK Basketball Tournament is a community outreach extension of SERC-NAHRO, an affordable housing council. It serves as a pivotal platform for fostering unity and positive development among youth residing in affordable housing communities. Dothan Housing is incredibly proud of their team’s dedication and participation in this meaningful event. Their journey in the tournament goes beyond wins and losses, contributing to their personal growth, educational enrichment, and exposure to bigger and better opportunities.

Dothan Housing is dedicated to providing its residents with resources and opportunities for success, both on and off the court. This commitment extends beyond basketball, encompassing educational support, career development programs, and community-building initiatives.
