About Us
Established in 1942, Dothan Housing (DH) is an independent quasi-governmental public corporation funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). DH is governed by a seven-member Board of Commissioners appointed by the Mayor of the City of Dothan. It is managed by a President & CEO. DH is not a City of Dothan Agency or Department.
DH has been a Moving to Work (MTW) Expansion Agency under the Landlord Incentives Cohort#3 since 2022. DH was granted flexibility and authority to develop policies in accordance with MTW for Expansion Agencies Operations Notice (Federal Register/ Vol. 85, NO. 168) FR/5994-N-05 outside the limitations of specific HUD regulations and provisions.
DH provides affordable housing opportunities in the City of Dothan, Houston County, and the surrounding Wiregrass Metro Area (WMA) counties of Henry, Dale, Geneva, & Coffee. DH develops and redevelops affordable housing through its nonprofit instrumentality, Our Community, Inc. (OCI), and other public-private partnerships.
DH offers workforce housing and administers affordable housing programs to assist low and moderate-income (LMI) individuals, families, the elderly, veterans, people with disabilities, by providing rental housing units in either the public housing or private housing markets through the following:
- Public Housing
- Housing Choice Vouchers (HCVs), formerly known as “Section 8”
DH offers a variety of resident services programs through its nonprofit instrumentality, Building Opportunities toward Self-Sufficiency, Inc. (BOSS), such as:
- Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS)
- HCV Homeownership
- R.I.S.E. Workforce Development
- Housing Counseling, including Ready to Rent (R2R) Education
Climate
Dothan, Alabama has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters. The city experiences rainfall throughout the year, with some of the heaviest precipitation occurring during the summer months.

Located in Southeast Alabama, Dothan City Schools serves more than 8,000 Pre-Kindergarten through 12th-grade students throughout Dothan, Alabama. A total of 19 schools compromise the school system and includes:

- 11 elementary schools
- One middle school that serves grades 7-8
- One 9th grade academy
- One virtual school for grades 7-12
- One high school that serves grades 10-12
