Dothan Housing Authority Celebrates Fair Housing Month 2024
Put the Act Back in Action within the Wiregrass Metropolitan Area
Dothan, AL – The Dothan Housing Authority (DHA) is excited to announce a series of events throughout April in recognition of National Fair Housing Month. This year’s national theme, “Put the Act Back in Action,” emphasizes the ongoing importance of knowing factual information about the Fair Housing Act and ensuring equal access to safe and affordable housing for all.
Awareness started early with a unique partnership with the Wiregrass Museum of Art. On March 26th, the museum worked with Dothan Housing’s Resident Services Department to create the “Door of Opportunity” art installation. This interactive work celebrates Fair Housing Month and encourages residents to reflect on the power they hold to unlock opportunities for themselves and their communities. Residents of all ages were invited to contribute “keys” that symbolize their journeys towards affordable housing, whether starting the search, advocating for change, or simply opening their minds to the possibilities.
DHA encourages the community to participate in the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) virtual Fair Housing Month opening ceremony on April 11th. This national event will feature inspiring stories, educational resources, and a call to action to promote fair housing practices. Participants can register by visiting https://www.hud.gov/FHM.
On the 16th of April, during the City of Dothan’s monthly commission meeting, a joint proclamation for Fair Housing Month will be presented as a collaboration between CDBG Administrator Kelly Mierkowski and the leadership team of Dothan Housing Authority.
“We are excited to continue this new tradition of the Fair Housing Month Proclamation with the City of Dothan and bring awareness to the importance of the Fair Housing Act of 1968,” says DHA CEO Samuel P. Crawford.
The community is invited to join the DHA staff for their Fair Housing Training on Tuesday, April 23rd, at 12:00 pm inside the Michael C. Patton Event Center located at 1001 Montana ST. Dothan, AL 36303. This informative session will provide valuable insights into fair housing rights and protections. Staff will engage in their annual refresher learning how to identify and report housing discrimination, connect with Dothan Housing’s expert team and special guests like Attorney Rachel Grezcyn of Legal Services, and, most importantly, ask their fair housing questions!
DHA believes that fair housing is a fundamental right that benefits everyone in the community. Participating in these events allows residents and citizens to gain valuable knowledge, connect with local resources, and stand together to support a more equitable housing market.
The agency desires all Dothan residents and the great Wiregrass Metropolitan Area to join us in celebrating Fair Housing Month. Whether you attend one of our events, share educational resources with your network, or learn more about your fair housing rights, your participation makes a difference.
