Historic Property, Dothan Housing Providing New Opportunities

On Thursday, October 29, 2020, Dothan Housing participated in the ribbon cutting for the grand opening of the Howell School Senior Apartments. Dothan Housing was excited to partner with the Banyan Foundation to renovate the old Howell School building into affordable housing for its seniors. This was an opportunity of a lifetime to take this historic building and transform it into affordable housing, say Dothan Housing CEO, Samuel P. Crawford.
The $14 million project was a mixed-financed development that included low-income housing tax credits (LIHTC), historical tax credits, and 55 project-based vouchers (PBVs).
This development is the culmination of a community working together and a public-private partnership between the City of Dothan, Dothan Housing, the Banyan Foundation, Alabama Housing Finance Authority, Gateway Management, and other affordable housing stakeholders, said Crawford.
We are so humbled by this opportunity to have allocated 55 PBVs for this development for our senior residents to live in these beautiful apartments. We are also extremely proud of all the hard work that our staff at Dothan Housing did to get our residents leased-up at this new development under the PBV program. This vision that started years ago has been brought to reality, said Crawford.
