Dothan Housing is Declared Heart Safe by the Southeast Health Foundation

Housing Authority Receives Grant for Six Automated External Defibrillators

Dothan Ala.—Dothan Housing (DH) is pleased to announce that several properties have received their HeartSafe designation from the Southeast Health Foundation’s HeartSafe Program. The designation will allow the agency to better serve the community by rendering it capable of providing emergency heart defibrillation when needed. Team members are excited to celebrate another agency “first” which includes a grant for six Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs).

Through the HeartSafe program initiative, the Southeast Health Foundation ensures workplaces like Dothan Housing, campuses, and communities in Houston County have been encouraged to become recognized as HeartSafe. To be eligible, an organization must complete an application and meet specific criteria, including ensuring that an adequate number of individuals receive training in hands-on CPR and that AEDs are available within a certain distance.

DH’s team completed its Hands-Only CPR and AED training with the Dothan Fire Department earlier this year in March under the leadership of Community Safety Manager Jason “JD” Miller. Team members who trained enjoyed engaging during the life-saving exercises. “As an agency, we want the public to know that we are committed to doing more than housing, but also keeping them safe from internal and external harm,” says Miller.

Tera Wells, DH Grant Writer, wrote a grant available through the foundation to secure AEDs for Dothan Housing, a critical component of the HeartSafe designation. Her efforts secured six for the agency and will allow the housing authority to be equipped to provide HeartSafe emergency care to visitors and community members if needed.

“I am grateful to the Southeast Health Foundation and the HeartSafe Program for working with our team to ensure we receive this important designation,” stated Wells. “This collaboration has been huge for us and reiterates our pursuit of being a ‘go to’ community resource.”

The following properties will be receiving a designation:

  • Crimson Ridge
  • David C. Jamison Village
  • Samuel P. Crawford Village
  • Our Community Housing and Enrichment Center (OCHEC).

“This is progress and evidence that our agency is committed to chasing better and incorporating best practices that exceed the average housing authority,” says Samuel P. Crawford, CEO of DH.

The agency is grateful to have received this recognition during National Fire Prevention Week. For more information on our efforts in the area of health, wellness, and community safety, please get in touch with Leah Gunn, Communications Coordinator, at lgunn@dothanhousing.org.
